How many times have you been late, standing in front of mirror and trying to choose the right color combination for you and your outfit? And how many times have you opted for the same old color matchings you are used to, and dreamt of beautiful rainbows? Knowing how to pair colors is important: it can either make or break your outfit. What you need to know is also that you can actually let your phantasy and your outfits play with more colors than you think. Here’s a couple of advice by Malini on the secrets of the perfect color combinations.
The basic idea is to match opposites and combine contrasts in a cohesive and interesting way. That’s what painters do, and what you as well can do – just as Malini does when producing her color dream collections. Matching colors in the right palette creates cohesion, and contrasts make outfits appear more interesting. Colors have indeed the power of generating emotions and creating associations between them.
When you mix together primary colors, for instance, you immediately create a bold look and express a strong personality. Think of blue and red, for example, on a summer dress or on a business outfit: the effect is the same, and is the immediate communication of a free-spirited, joyful woman. However, when these pairings are likely to be too much, primary colors can work great also for a monochrome look. Styling an outfit using only one color or analogous colors, when executed correctly, appears modern and chic. This color choice has also the advantage of streamlining the body.
The shape of your body, your skin tone and the occasion are good criteria to consider when choosing to mix different complementary colors in the wide range between monochrome and opposite combinations. There’s nothing better of a dream pink and yellow sarong for the summer or an elegant grey and purple scarf for cold weather: your day would immediately appear more interesting and dynamic. Have fun mixing different complementary color and their emotional associations: think green and pink. While green expresses emotional balance and is a flattering choice for all skin tones, pink – as color of the year – is a sophisticated choice which adds to dresses a sweet touch and a twist on nostalgic florals.
Sometimes, though, situations require more subdued and moderate looks. Here, of course, neutrals can be very helpful: black, white and greys, but also navy, brown, tan, cream, beige and khaki. They can be paired with any other color (or together) serving as great backgrounds to pops of color you can add in order to brighten up your style. Inside every outfit is always a rainbow waiting to shine!
