It all begins with a drawing. A carver transfers it onto a block of wood and carves it by hand, with very fine chisels, for days. Each color needs a different block.

Then comes the printer. The cotton is laid out on a long padded table, the block is dipped in color and placed on the fabric with a firm strike of the palm. Then again, and again, aligning each impression with the previous one by eye, until the motif covers the whole cloth. The fabric is washed, dried in the sun, and only then does it pass into the hands of the tailor, who cuts and sews it into the shape of the kimono.
